9/11 photo with strange G.O.D message

911-god

We were living on Broadway between Berry and Wythe and the morning of 9/11. When we heard on the TV about the first plane, I just knew it could not have been an accident on such a clear sunny morning. I spent the next few hours, between the road downstairs, the TV in the loft and the balcony out back looking in disbelief, listening to the helicopters overhead and the army on foot on the bridge, documenting some of what I saw. One of the early shots I took from the road looking towards Manhattan and the towers was the one with the G.O.D truck. Imagine... 1-800-Dial-God just happened to be parked there at this particular moment... stranger than fiction... I remember the first moment I hit the street, I was taking some movie footage of the towers, no one was about at this stage except one woman walking, with her back to the city, towards me. She noticed I was filming and turned to look in the direction of my attention and said out loud 'oh my God'

illustration for those who love Claude Mckays America like I do, if you don't know it you are in for a treat

Nyc-mashup

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!
Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,
Giving me strength erect against her hate.
Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood.
Yet as a rebel fronts a king in state,
I stand within her walls with not a shred
Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer.
Darkly I gaze into the days ahead,
And see her might and granite wonders there,
Beneath the touch of Time's unerring hand,
Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand.

Williamsburg NYC snow year 2000

Williamsburg-snowshot

Yesterdays snow pic out my window here in Paris reminded me of this shot I took out the window of the JMZ train in Williamsburg heading into Manhattan back in the winter of 2000

Manhattan-sketch

after yesterdays clear and clean NZ summer memory, today is a NYC state of mind. Unfortunately my travel plans are confined to brisk walks between Goncourt and Gambetta... could be worse!
